Introduction to Surah Al-Nasr
Surah Al-Nasr is a Madani Surah that was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) after Hijra. Its revelation occurred during the pilgrimage in Makkah, after the battle of Hunayn, or Khaybar. Actually, that was in the last days of the Prophet (PBUH) before his death.

إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ
Iza jaaa’a nasrul-laahi walfath
When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest,
وَرَأَيْتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًۭا
Wa ra-aitan naasa yadkhuloona fee deenil laahi afwajaa
And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes,
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wastaghfirh, innahoo kaana tawwaaba
Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
What is the Tafseer of Surah Al-Nasr Meaning in English (Verse by Verse)?
The Tafseer of Surah Al-Nasr is so simple. Its words are easy and familiar; its verses are short and easy to understand and memorize.
Tafseer Surah Al-Nasr Verse #1
‘Iza jaaa’a nasrul-laahi walfath’ means: if the victory of Allah and ‘Fath’ opening of Makkah happened. Adding the name ‘Allah’ to victory clarifies that no true victory comes from other than Allah.
Tafseer Surah Al-Nasr Verse #2
This verse is a completion of the previous one.
‘Wa ra-aitan naasa’ means: …and you saw people. ‘yadkhuloona fee deenil laahi afwajaa’ means embracing the religion of Allah in numerous groups.
This verse came true in ‘Fath’, the opening of Makkah in year eight after Hijra. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Muslims entered Makkah in peace, where some people embraced Islam and others remained on kufr. However, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told them, ‘Go, you are free.

Tafseer Surah Al-Nasr Verse #3
‘Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wastaghfirh’ means if you saw all mentioned previously, glorify Allah (saying Subhan Allah) and ask His forgiveness.
‘innahoo kaana tawwaaba’ means He (SWT) always accepts people’s repentance.
‘Al-Tawwab’, which means the one who always accepts repentance, is one of the great names of Allah (SWT); where it shows how Merciful He is to his creatures.
The verse shows that a Muslim, during the victory, should be humble and glorify Allah, who is the cause of victory. He should also ask for His forgiveness as he could have committed a sin or thought the victory was due to himself.

Nasr Comes After So Much Effort

When Muslims performed Hijra to establish their new Islamic community, they started to get stronger and learn more about Islam from the mouth of the prophet (PBUH).
They established their own army, defended against attacks, and had a greater opportunity to call people to the religion of Allah. They defeated their enemies in many battles despite their smaller numbers by the will of Allah. They peacefully opened Makkah, where they were able to return and perform Omra and pilgrimage.
It was then when The Virtues of Surah Al-Nasr revealed, telling us that ‘Nasr’, victory, finally happened after Muslims had gone through trough days and hardships as an examination from Allah to know the truthful and the Lier.
“Do you think you will enter Paradise without Allah proving which of you ˹truly˺ struggled ˹for His cause˺ and patiently endured?” (Quran 3:142)
The First Step for Nasr is the Nasr Over Oneself
One cannot achieve victory in life unless he achieves victory over his own desires and selfishness. He should be able to give away his time, money, effort and even his life for the sake of Allah. This cannot happen except by proper understanding of the Quran and Sunnah as well as reading through the biography of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions.
Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example” (Quran 33:21)
A Muslim Should Respond to Nasr in Humility
Allah taught Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) how to respond to Nasr. He said to him that if Tafsir of Surah Al-Nasr came, glorify Allah. That indicates that a Muslim always immediately remembers Nasr is from Allah, no other, and that He couldn’t achieve it except by Allah’s will and guidance. So, he becomes humble and modest.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to lower his head while entering Makkah in victory in a humble way.
Praising Allah for Nasr by Asking for Forgiveness and Glorifying Allah
Allah taught us in the Quran that whenever we achieve victory, we should glorify Allah by saying ‘SubhanAllah’ and asking His forgiveness.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to do this frequently. It was narrated by Aisha that after the revelation Tafsir of Surah Al-Nasr, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite in every prayer: “Subhanaka Rabbana was bihamdika (Glory to Allah and all praise to Him), Allahum-maghfir li (Forgive my sins, O Allah)”. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Do you not know: Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad (Surah Al-Ikhlas)?” He said: “Of course.” The prophet (PBUH) replied: “It is a third of the Qur’an.”
