Lessons of Surah Fatiha and Life Applications

Importance of Surah Al-Fatiha has many important lessons, we will discuss a few of them in the following paragraphs:

1. Always Start by Bismillah

The Quran started by Bismillah, so always start by Bismillah. It is a sunnah, it brings Allah’s blessings and it reminds you of the intention behind your deeds as well.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Any deed that doesn’t start by bismillah is away from Allah’s blessing”.

(Al-Gami’ Al-Sagheer 6266)

2. Always Praise Allah

Surah Al-Fatiha started by praising Allah for him being The ‘Rabb’ of the worlds, The most compassionate, The most merciful, and The Judge on the day of Judgment.

Allah’s blessings are many and uncountable, He gave us everything; starting from the air we breathe to the most complicated blessing in our life.

“If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you would never be able to number them. Indeed, humankind is truly unfair, ˹totally˺ ungrateful” (Quran (14:34))

Praising Allah leads to an increase in your Rizq. Allah says in the Quran:

‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more…”. It also pushes away punishment “…But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.”

(Quran (14:7)

3. Ask Allah by His Names

Surah Al-Fatiha included the most significant names of Allah; Allah, Rabb, Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, where these names preceded the duaa “Guide us to the straight path” showing that the best way to ask Allah is by calling His names, it is indeed a reason for accepting prayers.

Allah said:

“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So, call upon Him by them”

(Quran 7:18)

4. Always Remember the Day of Judgement

The day of Judgement was mentioned in the very beginning of the Quran. Remembering the day of judgment is essential to watch out for your deeds and avoid committing sins.

It also let us know that no oppression or inequity in this world will pass by and that all rights will be returned so that we realize how temporary is the Dunia and seek the hereafter. As Allah says in the Quran:

“We will set up the scales of justice on the Day of Judgment, so no soul will be wronged in the least. And ˹even˺ if a deed is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth.”

(Quran 21:47)

“Do not think ˹O Prophet˺ that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when ˹their˺ eyes will stare in horror (The day of Judgement)”

(Quran: 14:42)

It is also reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said about the Day of Judgement:

“Rights will certainly be restored to those entitled to them on the Day of Judgement, (to the point that) even the hornless sheep will lay claim upon the horned one.”

(Sahih Muslim 2582)

Tawheed is the cornerstone of Muslims belief, Spiritual Benefits of Surah Fatiha confirms that meaning through ‘Iyayaka na’budu’. Tawheed is the noblest purpose of our life, and it is an inevitable door to paradise.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized that meaning by teaching Muaz -one of his companions- these words: “… I advise you not to miss supplicating after every Salat (prayer) saying: O Allah, help me remember You, express gratitude to You and worship You in the best manner” (Riyad as-Salihin 384)

7. Seek Allah’s True Path

Allah’s path is clear and obvious. He (SWT) has clarified in Spiritual Benefits of Surah Fatiha the way to seek His path; by asking His guidance and following His Prophet (PBUH).

You also should refrain from doing like Jews, or Christians in rejecting Allah’s guidance.
